Today, I watched two American films set in Italy. One film is a thriller about some American dude that murders and impersonators a fella that he obsessives over in San Remo. The other film is a rom-com about an American woman and a British guy having a war of attrition over a villa in Verona.
I don’t know the significance of any of these movies to me is aat the moment. Maybe, I want to plan a trip to Italy? It is nice to travel like some American expirate across Europe, and spend money that I don’t have. The lifestyle in those American novels romanticizes “baroque” and uncultured American yte dude who is either a) spending their daddy’s allowance on alcohol and sexy time or b) about some ex-pat writer taking a gap year between writings.

I sound cynical and sarcastic, but that doesn’t mean those books and movies are dead on me. I do enjoy the idea of living somewhere that isn’t the Midwest. It is cool to go live AND work somewhere in Europe, preferably in Milan. I’ve dreamed of learning how to make my own pasta and enjoy espressos as the sun rises in the morning. I think, “Wow, wouldn’t it be cool to be like those people that get to travel outside of the US?” It is something to have that experience.

Yet, I wonder if dreaming about that lifestyle really is what I want. When I think about it, I’m more sold on traveling and living somewhere because Aurora and Chicago are all I know. I don’t come from money either, which has often kept me from making trips like that. I think there has to be something more for me to go somewhere like Italy, England, and even Spain (technically the country that colonized my country, but I don’t need to delve into that right now).

For me to live there or even take a trip out there, I just need to want it. At this moment, I’m content with my life. A journey is nice, but I understand and know it won’t lead to some momentous change in myself. It is just a trip somewhere for me to explore and enjoy.
